Description
If you're afraid of heights, this definitely is not for you! If you're looking for a unique experience, and one that has effectively remained unchanged since the early 1900's then this is a must do.
Viewing the grand canyon is remarkable, but to truely experience it, I recommend taking the mule train down to the bottom. No riding experience is necessary, but strong nerves are. It's a spectacular trip, going down through three climate zones on a steep narrow path with the mule in charge. Harrowing switchbacks with the mule leaning waaaay over the edge, with you looking down a couple of thousand feet.
We went in February, so snow and ice trails at the top added to the 'excitement'. Down at the bottom, we're in T-shirts for lunch, then back up. The round trip took 7 hours, and yes, we were sore when it was over!
Keep the nose of your mule to the tail of the mule in front and you'll be fine. If you don't your mule will start to run to catch up. Not what you want on an icy decline!
