Germany's 'Romantic' Road

Description
If you have a car and the opportunity, drive part or all of the 261 mile stretch of Germany’s Romantic Road. You’ll drive through unspoiled nature and picturesque towns with medieval castles, monasteries and towers. It’s a scenic drive from Bavaria's wine country to the foothills of the German Alps. Two cities worth stopping for and spending a night (or two) would be Wurtzburg and Rothenburg ob de Tauber (or simply Rothenburg). Wurtzburg is known for its cafes and wines whereas Rothenburg (my fav) is considered by many the most beautiful small town of Germany. It can be busy there, but being part of original medieval architecture is grand.

For accommodations I would suggest Eisenhut Hotel in Rothenburg. Not sure if it was because it was our honeymoon, but our dinner table reservations had a plate with our names and date written on it – their way labelling the table ‘reserved’ or simply because we were honeymooning? Either way, I found it charming and even got to keep the plate as a souvenir.

Following the romantic road is definitely worthwhile. If you find yourself in the south and have the time and want to stretch your legs, head west to see the town of Lindau. It is separated from the mainland by a causeway into the Bodensee (a lake), and is a little island with a harbour, great hotels and places to eat. Head to the harbourfront. From here you can look across the lake to Austria to the southeast and Switzerland to the southwest. We ate Kasespatzle, a specialty of the region, a type of pasta mixed with cheese and served with caramelized onions. Delicious!
