The region of Catalonia in Spain offers a great network of of good quality quiet roads with exceptional scenery. You can cycle in the flatlands, the foot hils of the Pyrenees, the Pyrenees and along the Costa Brava.
We rented for 1 week a 6 bedroom villas close to the town of Banyoles which was the Olympic rowing venue for the Barcelona games. The Villa has a pool, sauna, lovely grounds and was walking distance to a town with a greaet butcher. The villa is called Cans Banyoles or Cans Solaric. We did day rides from the villa anywhere from 60 -120 km per day. We also hired a guide, Gareth Speechely, for 2 days. He took us on 2 exceptional rides. His company, Girona Cycling, offers all sorts of tours, accomodation and training programs. He is well worth contacting.
We then spent 3 days cycling and touring on the Costa Brava staying in the town of Cadaques. Cadaques has strict building regulations and therfore there are no high rise hotels etc... I recommend the ride North along the coast to the border of France.
